Farewell to The Venue

Posted October 9, 2010

Last night was the launch of the 2nd Friday nights for Friday Folk at The Venue, Stocksbridge and you all turned out to come see our fabulous guests, BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award nominees, Katriona Gilmore and Jamie Roberts. As a pay at the door event, it was a first for us and we were delighted to see a whole new audience discovering the club as well as our long term regulars.

With two stunning sets from Kat & Jamie the new night could not have had a better start, though sadly it also turned out to the be the last of our Friday Folk nights at The Venue.

From the week commencing 4th October we received news that although Friday Folk has been a success, there were problems with the night remaining in it’s current home and that The Venue could no longer support the club financially.

It is with regret that Friday Folk cannot continue at The Venue and we have had to cancel forthcoming events, which includes performers who were booked up to a year in advance. I cannot express to you my disappointment and frustration with this unexpected situation, which is totally out of our control.

The club will be taking a break for the remainder of 2010, while we look at options for the future. We are sorry for the disappointment and thank everyone who has come to support what has grown to be one of the friendliest nights around. To our guests, floor spot artists and regular listeners: we couldn’t have grown without your support.

It’s not all bad news though, John and I have a folk club, Dearne Valley Folk at the Park Inn at Wath near Rotherham on the 2nd Saturday every month and we have a year’s commitment for club nights until Sept 2011. It’s the same format as Friday folk, bring your instruments and plug in to the PA with free entry for all and a special guest. More information at: http://dearnevalleyfolk.wordpress.com.

Hope we will see you there and we will keep you up to date with our latest Friday Folk developments.

Sincere thanks,
Charlie (& John) Barker - Friday Folk/ The Partnership Media

First Festival Success

Posted September 28, 2010

The weekend of 24th and 25th September came upon us very quickly and before we knew it the festival date had arrived. A surreal feeling after a year in preparation.

With everything in place, our two days of music started on the Friday night and ended with a triumphant climax on Saturday evening, where we all breathed a sigh of relief and wondered what we were going to do to fill the void of festival organising now?!?!

This first year was a great and interesting experience for us all and would like to thank all our Friday Folk supporters, the listeners and floor spot players who've supported the festival and our events in the run up to this new venture for us.

All our guests who came to play on the main Saturday event did it free of charge to support our chosen charity this year, the Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind. From our afternoon floor spot guests to the evening concert support and headliners a big thank you to you all.

We were joined by What Car? Driving School and Pictures of Sheffield Old & New who came to display at the event and also helped us raise money by offering prizes into the evening raffle.

In total, we raised £332.32 from all the ticket/ raffle and donation money you gave.

Thanks to our artists Anthony John Clarke & Ray Baguley, Steve Wise, John Watterson (Fake Thackray) and Harriet Bartlett who gave their time for free. To our wonderful stage and sound crew: Alex, John and Ben whose input and professionalism was key to making everything work so well and also our hospitality team, Max in the Green Room, Barbara and Graham in the kitchen and not forgetting The Venue's General Manager, Suzie Cross and the staff who spent endless days, weeks and months making sure everything was in place for the event to go ahead.

Well done everyone, you should be very proud.

Don't forget the launch of our 2nd Friday night's on 8TH OCTOBER with BBC Folk Award Horizon Nominees, Gilmore and Roberts in 2 weeks time. It is £4.50 on the door and there will be floor spot opportunities between 8-9pm and 10.30-11.30pm. Hope to see you there!

Message from Graham Silverwood, Chair of STEP Development Trust

Posted August 25, 2010

Following up from the recent letters about Friday Folk published in the local Stocksbridge newspaper, Look Local by someone calling themselves 'Old Folkie'. We have been sent many messages of support and praise from our regular club visitors, guests and staff at The Venue.

We would like to thank Tina McKevitt, John Leary (who wrote to the paper in support of the club), The Venue's Manager Suzie Cross and Graham Silverwood (from the board of chairs behind the scenes at The Venue).

Graham sent the following message of support for the club:

"Charlie / John,

Thank you for taking time to write this letter and for your continued support to The Venue and your commitment to the Friday Folk Club. 'Old Folkie' really doesnt make much logical sense does he! Leaving before an event starts is a strange one, and given that it is free entry makes it even stanger.

No matter, his is a small quibble at the side of the many congratulatory comments that I hear from many others about the club and its guest players and most particularly the atmosphere.

I play badminton every Friday evening and so miss the majority of the club and usually only catch the tail end from the bar. I have seen numbers grow of not only those attending but those performing.

One of the great things for me is that it brings people from outside the area to The Venue.
Ron Trueman Border caught my attention the other week, he had an exceptional voice, almost Springsteen like.

In these very difficult times The Venue remains open despite the rumours and remains committed to the Friday Folk club and to the both of you. Thank you once again.

Graham Silverwood
Chair, STEP Development Trust"

Thanks for showing everyone we have a great community!
Charlie (& John)

Old Folkie's Response

Posted August 12, 2010

For those local to Stocksbridge, you may have seen some letters written to the Stocksbridge newspaper Look Local, about Friday Folk from someone identifying themselves as 'Old Folkie'. We were saddened and dissappointed to read these comments about the club, which were published throughout the months of June to August and stated he came to The Venue and was unable to find the club so left, in spite of signage and staff/ customers being present throughout the building.

'Old Folkie' then wrote to Look Local after briefly coming to the night of Friday 30th July, which was also published.

Here is 'Old Folkie's' second letter (we have been unable to track down the first as yet) followed by Charlie's response, which we have asked to be published to re-dress the balance:

"FOLK CLUB FOUND
I thought people might be interested to know that I finally found where the Last Friday Folk Club was in the Venue this month.
I turned up earlier this time- at about 7.20pm- and was able to ask someone for directions as there were more people knocking around in the entry hall than last time.
However it didn't start until 8pm and I was the only member of the public there. There were more musicians than audience so I didn't stay long.
Am I the only person in the area that likes folk music?
- AN OLD FOLKIE"

Response from Charlie Barker and The Partnership Media:

"Dear Look Local,

I am writing with regards to the comments published by ‘Old Folkie’ about Friday Folk, hosted by Charlie Barker at The Venue, Stocksbridge.

As the host and promoter of this night, I felt sad reading the recent letters about ‘Old Folkie’s’ experience of The Venue and his opinions of the folk club itself and would like to set the record straight on the many issues raised some of which bear no comparison to the club that I’ve seen grow since the early days of The Venue’s existence.

In the face of folk clubs closing down, pubs going bankrupt and live music disappearing from the social scene, our business launched a new folk event in the pit of the deepest recession in living memory. The Venue in turn gave their all in supporting us, to make the night a success and shortly after the local community welcomed us as a regular date in their social and musical calendars.

In the last 4 months the club has grown to the extent that we are rapidly outgrowing our current base in the Samuel Fox Suite and have on occasion moved into the 200 capacity Steel Room for events. We had anticipated a more modest growth but have been pleasantly surprised by the scale of our audience and regular musicians and guests, who are some of the friendliest people I know.

At every club we have an advertised guest musician and the majority of the night is taken up with a range of floor spot performers who turn up on the night, get their name down at the door and play to a full house. The night has been publicised as starting at 8pm every month, on our websites, flyers, posters and advertising and am unsure as to why ‘Old Folkie’ thought it may be different?

On the evening in question where ‘Old Folkie’ attended we had around 75 members of the audience, some made up of floor spot musicians (11 acts in total that night) and the majority who come to enjoy and listen to the music. Our regulars know it’s a frequent occurrence that we have to bring in more tables and chairs to accommodate everyone.

Not a single musician has been turned away due to numbers and as people know who regularly join us, sound engineer John and I will accommodate every musician who wants to perform and give them the best sound quality we can, even if we have to stay till last orders on the late bar.

As a club it is our policy to include and accommodate musicians from all backgrounds, regardless of ability, age or style. For us folk is the music of the people and categorising our audience in a genre is a means limiting creativity. We welcome a range of styles from traditional to contemporary, to world music and popular styles. I’m pleased to say we had our first international guests from China who treated the club to music from their culture, which received a standing ovation. ‘Folk’ to us is just a word, but the message we send out is ‘We’re all folk aren’t we’?

‘Old Folkie’, I remember you on the night in question and was pleased to see a new face at the club. It was a shame when I was collecting names of performers at the beginning of the night that you left. You would have had a warm welcome from our regulars if you’d had chance to meet them, who arrived shortly after your exit. By 8.30pm the room was full and the night was well underway. I assure you, there are many people who like folk music in the area.

We receive feedback all time and are pleased to have been named October 2009’s Folk Club of the Month in online folk magazine, Fatea.co.uk. One of our regular performers and writer/ reviewer, Steve, has said we are “By far the best open-mic night in South Yorkshire”. You can read more about this on our website www.fridayfolk.co.uk. If anyone has any feedback most people feel comfortable to talk to me directly and so far everyone has been very positive.

Don’t be a stranger Old Folkie.

- Charlie (& John) Barker, Friday Folk/ The Partnership Media"

We are pleased to see and hear that our regulars have stepped in to support the club in the face of the negative comments published and are most grateful. We genuinely believe we have one of the friendliest clubs thanks to our audience and are proud to host such an event.

Local musician Tina McKevitt has said:

"Pleased to read your detailed response to Old Folkie. I've only ever had positive experiences of the club (when I've been able to get there, which isn't as often as I'd like) and think you do a great job with it. We need to support and encourage ventures like yours that do such a lot for live music. Keep up the good work!"

BEWARE: Fraudulent websites selling fake tickets

Posted August 5, 2010

It has come to our attention that there is a website claiming to sell tickets for Charlie Barker gigs and Charlie's folk club nights, for which there is no charge whatsoever. These nights are and have always been free entry for everyone, unless otherwise stated by a venue or Charlie's management. This matter has been reported to the Police.

Don't get scammed.

Bigger room needed!

Posted June 3, 2010

After nearly a year in the Samuel Fox Suite at The Venue, it was in April that we realised we needed to move the club to a new home to fit you all in... so in May we took to the stage of the larger Steel Room.

With the lights set, backdrop in place, PA and stage all ready to go, we went ahead in our new home and it looked and sounded great as ever.

We'd like to thank Suzie and the staff at The Venue for helping the move go so smoothly and ensuring everything was in place.

If you haven't seen what we're talking about then take a look in May's club gallery or even better: come down and see us next month!

Look forward to seeing you all there and thank you once again for your support!

End of the year... bring on 2010!

Posted December 1, 2009

As the year draws to an end for the Last Friday Folk Club, we'd like to thank everyone who has supported us in these early days and helped build what has been a great start for a new music club.

November saw a packed out club night with special guests Nick Atkinson and Kat Eaton from Feelix and of course our many talented floor spot guests. It is your input and support that has got the club up and running.

With Christmas and New Year celebrations falling so close to the Last Friday, our next club night is on 29th January 2010 with special guest, Paul Bell, who you may remember from our days as The Venue Open Mic. We hope to see you then and we shall leave you with some quotes and credits that the club has received in it's first 3 months...

Last Friday Folk Club - Club of the Month October 2009, www.fatea.co.uk

"The atmosphere that you create, the excellent sound amplification quality and the welcome afforded artists and audience, together make this far and away the best open-mic night in South Yorkshire."
- Steve, Last Friday Folk Club regular floor spot guest

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

See you all soon,
John & Charlie
